- Calgary Corporate & Personal Tax — Compliance, Planning & Optimization
Tax Accountant Calgary — Compliance Behind You.
Tax Planning — Opportunity Ahead
Tax is more than a year-end filing. It shapes your cash flow, your take-home pay, and your room to grow
The tax bill you did not see coming — bigger than you set aside for, on a year already closed — is the one that hurts most. Radiant Skies, your tax accountant in Calgary, keeps that surprise off your desk:
- Tax planning — you see next year’s tax number before the year closes, while there is still room to change it.
- Tax compliance — the closed year filed clean and on time, with what you owe settled, not guessed.
- Tax Optimization — running through both, so you pay what you owe, no more and no less.
The tax accountant in Calgary you talk to is the CPA who does the work — for owner-managed businesses across Calgary and the surrounding area.

What We Do for You — Tax Compliance, Planning, and Optimization
Tax Optimization runs through compliance and planning — claiming what is yours on the year behind you, and shaping what you owe on the year ahead:
Tax Compliance & Optimization — The Year That Has Happened, Filed Clean
You pay what you owe. We claim the deductions and credits you are entitled to, so you pay what you owe and no more.
File the closed year accurately and on time. Radiant Skies prepares your Corporate T2 and owner-manager T1 on time, so you stay compliant.
Keep support ready for the CRA. If a CRA query or reassessment arrives on a filed year, we handle the correspondence and information requests. Above all, we defend the positions filed.
Included for monthly clients: if you are on our recurring Bookkeeping, Accounting, or Fractional CFO services, we include your annual Corporate T2 and a qualifying owner-manager T1 with no separate fee. A qualifying return is a simple owner-manager return where roughly 90% of personal income comes from the corporation through salary or dividends.

Tax Planning & Optimization — The Open Year, Shaped Before It Closes
As your tax accountant in Calgary, we keep a close eye on the levers that move the tax you will owe, so your tax position stays optimized through the year:
Find the salary and dividend mix that fits your goals. We weigh your corporate and personal returns together against your RRSP goals, your CPP position, and your cash needs.
Protect your small-business tax rate. Radiant Skies watches the passive investment income your company earns on idle cash. Past roughly $50,000 in a year, that income starts to reduce the active profit that qualifies for the small-business rate.
Manage your draws before year-end. We plan your corporate draws around your year-end, so you handle the personal tax consequences ahead of time.

Frequently Asked Tax Accountant Calgary Questions
- Control
- Accountability
Can I file my own corporate tax return with software, or do I need a tax accountant?
Yes, you can. CRA rules allow self-filing, and approved software exists for it. What decides it is your corporation’s complexity.
For example, a company with assets, owner compensation, and GST filings has more moving parts than software prompts can surface.
Some owners file themselves for years without issue. Others, however, prefer a CPA for corporate tax filing in Calgary. The fee is fixed and known upfront, and we defend the positions if the CRA asks. Either way, the return is yours to decide.
Should I pay myself a salary or dividends from my corporation?
There is no standing answer; the right mix changes with your circumstances.
Salary builds RRSP room and CPP entitlement and is an expense to the corporation.
Dividends, by contrast, carry no payroll cost and flow from profit on which the corporation has already paid tax.
In addition, your cash needs, retirement plans, and the corporation’s tax rate all move the answer.
As your tax accountant in Calgary, we weigh the corporate and personal returns together. We then set the mix before year-end, while you can still change it.
Our article Salary vs Dividends for Canadian Business Owners walks through the trade-offs.
Can I pay someone as a contractor instead of putting them on payroll as an employee, and what is the difference?
You can, but only if the working relationship is one of a contractor. The CRA decides on the facts, not on the invoice. For example, who controls the hours, who owns the tools, who carries the risk of loss, and whether the person can work for others. Those are examples only; the CRA weighs several more factors together before it decides.
When the facts point to employment, the label does not hold. In that case, the corporation pays both the employer’s and the employee’s missed deductions, plus interest and penalties. Therefore, we assess the relationship first and set the payroll or the contract second. Our corporate tax services in Calgary cover that assessment and the paperwork that follows.
How much should it cost to have my corporate tax return done?
The fee depends on the state of your books and the complexity of the return. Clean books and a straightforward corporation sit at the low end. Messy books, multiple entities, or unfiled years, on the other hand, add work and cost.
We quote a fixed fee before any work begins, so the price does not move once we start.
Our recurring Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Fractional CFO services clients pay no separate fee. We include their corporate T2 and a qualifying owner-manager T1. Therefore, if you are comparing a corporate tax accountant in Calgary, ask for the fee in writing before the engagement, not after.
What does a tax accountant actually do beyond filing the return, that software does not?
Software calculates. It does not judge. The work beyond filing is the judgment: which deductions your corporation can support, how a purchase should be timed, what your draws will cost you personally, and how the corporate and personal returns fit together.
It is also the defence. When the CRA asks a question about a filed year, someone has to answer it with the working papers in hand.
In short, our corporate tax services in Calgary cover the filing, the judgment behind it, and the correspondence after it.
Is tax planning worth it for a business my size, or am I being sold something I do not need?
Planning is worth it when a decision is still open and its tax effect is larger than the fee. Your draws, a major purchase, the salary and dividend mix: these are the decisions we shape before year-end.
Even so, you can start with a standalone filing if there is a year that needs doing. We will prepare and file it correctly.
Tax planning in Calgary is a separate, forward-looking engagement with its own fixed fee. It is not a requirement, and we do not bundle it into a filing. In practice, most owners come to us first for a filing. Later, they move into ongoing work once they would rather get ahead of decisions than report them after the fact. That is your call, on your timeline.
What can I actually write off through the company without getting in trouble?
The test is the same for every expense. Did you incur it to earn business income, and can you show it? An expense that passes both parts is deductible. One that fails either part, however, is the one that draws a CRA question.
Some categories carry limits and mixed personal use: meals, vehicles, home office. For those, therefore, the answer is a percentage rather than yes or no.
A corporate tax accountant in Calgary earns their fee on exactly these lines. They claim what your records support and leave out what they do not.
Can a tax accountant actually lower my tax, and how would I check?
No honest accountant can promise a number. What we do is two things.
On the closed year, we claim what is legitimately yours, so you pay no more than the law requires.
Going forward, tax planning in Calgary works on the decisions in front of you, with their tax effect in view, so less becomes due where it legitimately can.
As for how to check, that is a conversation we have with you one to one, against your own numbers.
When in the year should I talk to a tax accountant: before year-end or only at filing time?
Before year-end.
To explain: compliance handles the year that is already closed, and that part is about filing it right.
Planning works on the year you are in and the ones ahead. The earlier we look, the more levers are still open.
Even partway through a year there is usually room. The decisions hardest to help with are the ones already made and filed.
So, as your tax accountant in Calgary, Cochrane, Chestermere, Okotoks, and Airdrie, we would rather see your numbers early. Autumn beats spring. Our article Tax Planning Starts When Tax Filing Ends explains the planning and compliance sides of tax in full.
